In 1992, 194 new cases of stomach cancer were observed in the Province of Modena (108 m, 86 f), allowing 5.9% of all cancers in males and 5.5% in females.

The crude incidence rates per 100,000 population were
37 in men and 28 in women.
Stomach cancer ranked fifth in men and third in women.
Since 1988, a decrease
in the incidence of stomach cancer has been observed in both sexes. New cases
fell from 263 in 1988 to 234 in 1989, 233 in 1990, 188 (-28%) in 1991 and 194 in
1992.
Young people rarely developed stomach cancer. In fact, there were only two cases diagnosed among people younger than 30 years in the last four years.
The lifetime risk of developing stomach cancer in the age 0-74 years was one in
48 in men and one in 100 in women.

Among 166 deaths for stomach cancer registered in 1992, 78% occurred in people
aged 70 years and older.
The mortality/incidence ratio (0.84 for men and 0.81 for women) was the highest
among the most frequent neoplasms registered.
The observed and relative 5-years survival of patients
suffering from stomach cancer was 19% and 24%, respectively, whereas the relative
survival was 22% in men and 27% in women.
