BLADDER CANCER: INCIDENCE, MORTALITY AND SURVIVAL


There were 210 new cases of bladder cancer in the Province of Modena in 1992 (162 m, 48 f).

This accounted for 8.8% of all cases in males and 3% in females.




Crude incidence rates were 54.9 in males and 15.4 in females.

Since 1988, no significant differences in incidence rates have been observed.

As for most cancers, the incidence rate increased with age.
Young people rarely developed bladder cancer: in fact, only five people younger than 40 years were diagnosed has having bladder cancer in 1992,as shown in the figure.

Men were 3.4 times more likely to be affected by bladder cancer than women.








In 1992, 33 men and 17 women died from bladder cancers.

The mortality increased proportionally with age in both sexes.

The mortality/incidence rate was 0.20 in men and 0.35 in women.







The observed and relative 5-year survival of patients suffering from bladder cancer was 62% and 76%, respectively. The relative survival was 77% in men and 70% in women.
