In 1992, 250 new cases of colon cancer (129 m, 121 f) were registered in the Province of Modena.
With a crude incidence rate of 43.7 for men and
38.9 for women, colon cancer represented 7% of all cases in males and 7.7% in
females.

Colon cancer
incidence ranked fourth in men (after lung, prostate
and bladder) and second in women.
During the last four years, the crude incidence remained constant: 40 per 100,000 men and 35 per 100,000 women in 1988, 34 and 37 in 1989, 41 and 33 in 1990, 40 and 47 in 1991, and 44 and 39 in 1992.
The cumulative risk of developing colon cancer in the age 0-74 years was 28
for men and 21 for women per 1,000 population.

During 1992,
135 deaths were registered (59 m, 76 f) with a
mortality/incidence ratio of 0.46 in men and 0.63 in women.
As for most cancers, incidence and
mortality rates increased with age in a similar way
in both sexes.
The observed and relative 5-year survival rate of
patients suffering from colon cancer was 39% and 48%, respectively, whereas
the relative survival turned out to be 51% in men and 46% in woman.
