LUNG CANCER: INCIDENCE, MORTALITY AND SURVIVAL


In 1992, 401 new cases of lung cancer were registered in the Province of Modena (346 m, 55 f).

Lung cancer represented the second most frequent neoplasm (11.8% of all cases and 15% of cases excluding non melanoma skin cancers).

Lung cancer incidence ranked first in men (22.3% of all cases) and sixth in women.



Crude incidence rates per 100,000 were 117 for males and 18 for females.



A common element between the two sexes was the incidence rate which increased with age, mostly after age 55.









In the same year 1992, 435 deaths were registered, 366 men and 69 women.

Crude mortality rates were 124 for males and 22 for females.

The number of deaths was higher among patients aged 55 years and older, with a sharp increase in mortality rate in the age classes of 60 years and older.

The lung cancer mortality/incidence ratio was high in both sexes (>1 for both men and women).





The observed and relative 5-year survival for lung cancer was 8% and 10% respectively, whereas the relative survival was 10% in men and 9% in women, respectively.
